Berkeley Electronic Press Selected Works. Software Only Dante. Dante Virtual Soundcard has existed for a long time but is designed to be a way to connect a computer to a hardware based Dante network. Dante Via offers a way to build software only Dante networks but while a very clever piece of software, Via only offers a partial solution. With the release of the two products, which form.
Dante Virtual Soundcard is a robust, high channel count application with the single purpose of getting a large number of channels in and out of a computer, while Dante Via allows for a much more diverse set of devices and applications to be routed and networked, but at a lower channel count.
I've been a longtime fan of Audinate's excellent Via product. What at first seemed like a cut-down version of the older Dante Virtual Soundcard actually is a much cleverer product than DVS but the advantages aren't immediately apparent. In my review of Dante Via I explain how useful it is for routing audio and how it offers the ability to create software-only Dante networks. At the time it was limited to 2 channels per application making the difference between Via and DVS clear.
When Audinate updated Via last year the 2 channel limitation was raised to 16 channels, making Via far more useful but also clouding the difference between these two complementary products.
Both are essential tools in Dante environments and if you want to get started with Dante then Audinate offer a bundle option of a license for Via and DVS for a combined price of $59.95 USD, a saving of 25% on the price of separate licenses.
